Nice Plum

‘Plumdog’ by Emma Chichester Clark is a cute book or should I almost call it a comic? Its all pictures which is a nice format. The drawings are very lively and cute. At times I got caught up in all the drawings I almost forgot to read the short amount of text. A very easy read.

The basic story is that Plum the dog has a blog and tells her story for an entire year.

Cute yes but it does become repetitive at times. Trips, walking, getting wet and chasing sticks…we get it.

Now for the criticism.

1) There are far too many characters, especially human characters to keep apart. Yes uncle Joe and Aunt Mary and Grandfather Arnold and the boys and David and Joe and well you get the point. Also certain jokes (like counting dog years one someone) works the first two times but by the fifth time it gets old.

2) There is a drawing of a baby grabbing the dog by its tail. No its not cute and should not have been added to the book. (This moment occurs on the 15th of September date). A few pages before it was shown that Plum does not like her tail pulled (and who would).

3) And number 3. The big one that made this book drop in rating was the fact that the word Sh*t was included on the August 28th page with the line being “…I am the one who doesn’t acaully give a Sh*t”

I normally don’t mind when I’m reading a book if and when this word is used BUT when its a book that kids could and will easily pick up because of all the drawings no just no. And really the word just did not fit the rest of the book and felt very forced and out of character. Especially considering a few pages later its remarked about some of the bad language a parrot says.

This was a moment where something else could have been used such as “…I am the one who doesn’t acaully give a woof” or something like that.
